February 27

What a great week we had! The kids were incredible at the Abravanel Hall. One of, if not the, best behaved group there; I was so proud! It was a great concert and experience for all. Several notes were sent home on Friday to be looking for. One is about the book fair which takes place during parent teacher conferences. If your conference is scheduled for Thursday March 8 after 6:45pm they are asking that you attend the book fair before your conference. That way they can start taking down and cleaning up before it gets too late. The next note to be looking for is for volunteers for “tool day”, otherwise known as career day. We would love to have parents (or grandparents!) who are able to come in and share a bit about their career.
Finally, your child’s latest math and reading tests were sent home on Friday. Those that increased their scores by at least 5 points on the math test earned some extra recess. However, our reading scores went down. Remember to keep practicing math but don’t neglect reading. Thanks for all your hard work and please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

*If you haven’t signed up for parent teacher conferences please do so on the school website just like last time!

Field Trip!!

Next Thursday, February 23rd, the 5th grade will be attending a performance by the Utah Symphony at Abravanel Hall. We will be leaving the school at 9:00am and returning in time for lunch at school. We ask that students dress nicely that day as to show respect for the performance. There is no need to buy anything new, just the nicest you have will do.  We look forward to a great day!

Looking Ahead...

On Thursday February 23rd we will be heading to Abravanel Hall for a performance by the Utah Symphony! Please make sure students are on time that day. We will be back in time for lunch, so no special arrangements will need to be made. It should be a great field trip!

Even further ahead...
We have decided we will have the 5th grade talent show and spelling bee on May 14. A list of words for the spelling bee will be sent home this coming week. Good luck!

State Project Update

A letter will be sent home on Monday (2/13) with this information as well.

Amended 5th Grade State Project Guidelines

The State Projects consist of 3 main parts:
1.   A classroom presentation/report that is between 4-6 minutes in length.  This must be in the student’s own words.
2.   A shoebox float
3.   A trifold brochure (done in computer class)

The report should include information and illustrations of the following:
a.   state flag
b.   state bird
c.    state flower
d.   state nickname
e.   license plate
f.     primary natural resources
g.   main geologic features
h.   map of the state
i.      state seal
j.      a brief history of the state; including the date of statehood

Please have students do their own drawings for the illustrations.  The information for the report should be secured in a presentation folder.

The shoebox float should represent the highlight(s) of the state in 3D format.  For example, New York could have the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and/or Niagara Falls built on the top of the decorated box.

The trifold brochure is done in the computer lab but students will need to bring the information with them.  Student’s research should include information that might be used in a travel brochure such as:
a.   cultural highlights
b.   recreational activities
c.    climate and weather
d.   educational institutions
e.   famous people
f.     historical monuments, museums, etc.
g.   sports teams
Please note that students need all of their research no later than March 12.

This research is to be done at home and brought to school for the computer project.  This can be in a notebook or folder
The state reports will be presented on Friday, April 20th.

Just a quick reminder!

Yesterday and today there are some notes coming home that need to be looked over. There is one for DARE and one regarding some testing that need to be signed and brought back. I sent one home today regarding Valentine’s Day. Just in case that one never made it home I’ll post a copy of it here. Next week be looking for updated information on our state reports. Thanks and as always feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions!

Valentine’s Day!
We will be doing a small class Valentine’s party Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately we will not have time to spend in class making Valentine’s boxes, however, students are more than welcome to make them at home and bring them in on Tuesday. I will have extra bags if students aren’t able to bring one. You are also welcome to bring Valentine’s to pass out; I simply ask that you bring enough for everyone (we have 26 students in class). Thanks!
